Bismarck du Plessis is one of the most respected and recognisable figures in South African rugby history. A Rugby World Cup winner, Rugby Championship winner, and veteran of three Rugby World Cup campaigns, he built a career defined by consistency, longevity, and an uncompromising commitment to excellence. Over 79 Test matches for the Springboks and more than 400 first-class appearances, he established himself as one of the premier hookers of the professional era.
Born in Bethlehem in the Free State, Bismarck made his professional debut in 2003 before enjoying a decade of success with the Sharks, where he became one of the most influential players in South African rugby. Alongside his brother Jannie, he formed part of one of rugby’s most famous sibling partnerships, representing South Africa together on the international stage and contributing to some of the Springboks’ most successful years. His achievements include the 2007 Rugby World Cup triumph, the 2009 Tri-Nations title, and victory in the British & Irish Lions series.
Following his success in South Africa, Bismarck continued his career in France with Montpellier, where he added European honours and further cemented his reputation as one of the game's most respected professionals. Throughout his career, he earned admiration not only for his physical presence and competitive spirit, but also for the discipline, preparation, and resilience required to compete at the highest level for more than two decades.
Today, Bismarck brings these experiences to the stage through engaging conversations on elite performance, overcoming adversity, teamwork, and sustaining excellence over the long term. Drawing on lessons learned from World Cup campaigns, championship-winning teams, and a career spent competing against the best players in the world, he offers audiences a candid perspective on what separates good teams from great ones.
Authentic, grounded, and highly respected, Bismarck du Plessis remains one of South African sport's most admired figures—an individual whose career exemplifies commitment, resilience, and the pursuit of excellence.
