Dave Levinsohn is one of South Africa’s original and most distinctive comedy performers, with a professional career stretching back to 1997. Best known for his improvisational, audience-driven style, Dave has developed a reputation for comedy that is spontaneous, intelligent and wonderfully unpredictable. His career began at the Coffee Lounge comedy club, where he became a long-standing host and performer and sharpened the instinct that would become his trademark: the ability to read a room, respond instantly and turn whatever is happening around him into comedy.

Over more than two decades, Dave has performed on some of South Africa’s leading comedy platforms, including the Vodacom International Comedy Festival, Cape Town International Comedy Festival and Smirnoff Comedy Festival. He was also among the early South African stand-up comedians invited to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe, appearing there in 2012 with Loyiso Gola. His television and advertising credits include co-presenting the first series of SABC 3’s Going Nowhere Slowly, appearances in award-winning advertising campaigns and writing and performing on Tonight with Trevor Noah. His comedy career has also earned competition recognition, including winning the Red Bull Comedy Jam in 2004 and the Nando’s Most Original Approach to Comedy award at Grahamstown in 2008.

Dave is particularly effective in the corporate environment because his comedy is built around connection rather than confrontation. His offbeat observations, quick wit and improvisational ability allow him to adapt naturally to different audiences, from conference delegates and executives to gala-dinner guests and corporate teams. He can perform a focused comedy set, host an event, MC a conference or golf day, or act as a comedy host who keeps an audience engaged between programme elements. His ability to tailor his material to the occasion gives clients an entertainment experience that feels relevant rather than generic.

Based in Johannesburg and touring regularly, Dave brings the experience of a seasoned professional together with the unpredictability that makes live comedy exciting. He is a performer, MC, writer, director and producer who understands both sides of an event — the entertainment and the brief behind it. For organisations looking for smart, original humour that energises a room without relying on a predictable formula, Dave Levinsohn offers something genuinely valuable: a comedian who can walk onto a stage with a plan, throw the plan away when the moment demands it, and make the audience part of the show.
